Jeløy, Norway - The Pearl Of The Oslofjord

Jeløy, Norway - The Pearl of the Oslofjord

A 40 minutes train ride south of Oslo will leave you at a city called Moss. A charming city of roughly over 32.000 residents. This city is also my hometown.  I grew up on a half-island in Moss called Jeløy. Jeløy is known as the pearl of the Oslofjord because of its beautiful landscape, beaches, and treks. This post will inspire you to take you to Jeløy, only a day trip from Oslo. Here are some of the best places to see in jeløy.

Walk the coastal trail: Kyststien

To see the best of Jeløy, walk Kyststien from Framnes to Alby and experience breathtaking scenery.

Along Kyststien you will see the Bastøy ferry that goes from Moss to Horten.

Bastøy is currently a prisoner island and it is been said to be one of the best prisons in the world where the prisoners can focus on building a good life instead of behind punished in inhumane ways. The prison has been featured in Michale Moore's documentariesSicko and Where to Invade Next The island used to be an island for boys that behaved badly or didn't have parents, it is also a film which is based on how the island was back in the day as a Boys Island, the filmed is called King of the Devil's Island in English.

Alby Gård

The beautiful Alby gård is a favourite destination for many local residents as well as many people from around the country.

Alby gård is the oldest farm in Jeløy and has roots all the way back to the Viking age. The current building has been like this since a big fire in 1866. The farm has been open to the public since 1963.

Try the Alby Kringle!

Alby Gård also got a cafe and you have to try the one and only Alby Kringle! It is amazing and you won't find it anywhere in the world.

Check out the art at Galleri F15

Galleri F15 is at Alby and it is a very interesting gallery exhibiting contemporary artists from around the world. Some of the artworks can be very bizarre and engaging. Worth checking out. Galleri F15 is open from 11 am -5 pm every day except Mondays. Check out the upcoming events here.

Enjoy the hidden beach: Bredebukt

Bredebukt, a beautiful and hidden beach near Alby.

Jeløy Radio

The radio station is currently just a coastal radio. Jeløy Radio is now a hotel and conference centre.

Hesteberget

Gullholmen

From Hesteberget you can see a small island called Gullholmen. It has a lighthouse and you can find gold there. I used to go there with my school as a kid. You can also stay at the house on the island if you book in advance. If you have a boat you can go there anytime and swim etc.

 Torpedostasjonen at Tronvik

The Torpedo station is privately owned and was used during ww2 fighting against the Nazis.

Tronvikstranda

Tronvik is the best beach in Jeløy. It is the most environmentally friendly and has gained a blue flag for that. If you go to Jeløy on St. Hans make sure to check the huge bonfire and party at Tronvik. It is the best beach to be on a hot summer day. You can stay there until the sun sets in front of you. It is also a beautiful place to walk to during autumn with beautiful colours.

Getting from Tronvikstranda to the forest lookout you have to go towards the diving clubhouse and through a hidden trail from there. It is not on google maps. But you will see people walking towards the next beach on rocky sand. That is the way and you will see the small trail.

Tronvikskogen

If you walk towards the diving club at Tronvikstranda you can walk up to the beautiful trail that leads you to Tronviksskogen. It is a beautiful view of the Oslofjord and you can also see all the way to Oslo. Best time to go is at sunset! It is probably my favourite place to view the landscape in Moss.

Walking towards the trails in the forest Tronvikskogen from the Diving Club at Tronvik will leave you near the Refsnes School and from there you can easily walk towards Refsnes Gods.  Be aware that this trail is not on google maps. Using that will lead you on a long way all the way around the forest. It is better to ask people walking around. Most people speak English :)

Refsnes Gods

Refsnes Gods is the most exclusive and oldest hotel in Moss. When it says Gods doesn't mean God, God, but gods in Norwegian means mansion. It is 250 years old. You can have lunch/dinner there or stay the night. It is amazing to stay there on a summer night where you will see the sun sets over the ocean and the fjord.

Galleri Varden

Galleri Varden is another gallery in Jeløy that exhibits well-known Norwegian visual artists like Ari Behn and Pushwagner. The gallery itself is not as much open as Gallery F15. Gallery Varden is open during the weekend, check out coming exhibitions here.

Varden is also a great place to just enjoy the view of Alby, The Oslofjord and the rest of Jeløy. Varden is the place to be if you want to see the fireworks on New Year's Eve.

Eat at Hos Naboen

If you are looking for a nice place to eat while you check out Jeløy. I highly recommend Hos Naboen. They have awesome dishes and super friendly staff. Quiz every Friday and a good spot if you are just feeling like a beer.

Jeløy walking route

Walking the whole route will take at least 5 hours. Longer if you want to stop and check out the galleries and eat at the cafes.

Would you check out Jeløy if you visit Oslo?
