According to recent research founded by Hilton Garden Inn, if you indeed have a bucket list, chances are travelling is on it. As a matter of fact, a survey backed by the famous hotel chain revealed that roughly 83% of people have travel at the top of their bucket lists.
You’ll agree that there’s a lot to see and do in the world – so the question most of us have on our minds is – where to start? You have the usual Paris and the Eiffel Tower, the city of Agra and the Taj Mahal but what are some of the hidden gems out there?

What is it?
Let’s start things off with the place pleasantly nicknamed “Doors to Hell” - The Darvaza Gas Crater. So if you’re person who enjoys nothing more than sitting in front of a camping fire, but you’re tired of roasting marshmallows and you want to up the ante, then you need to pack your backpack and head over to Turkmenistan right away.
Why should you visit?
The crater is approximately 70 meters wide and a size of a football field, and every evening it makes a spectacular light show – think the finale of V for Vendetta. However, you have to be careful when visiting a place with word “hell” in its name. The crater is a source of methane – which is highly toxic – and it is basically located in a desert, so it would be wise to bring an emergency kit with food, supplies and water filters.

What is it?
Have you ever visited a kebab shop? While this may sound like a random question, it’s related to our second destination, because if you ever entered a kebab shop, then you’ve definitely seen a picture of Pamukkale Pools. These natural pools are created by Travertine, a sedimentary rock deposited by water from the hot springs.
Why should you visit?
Even though you can find picturesque Travertine terraces all around the world – from the USA to China – nowhere else in the world you can enjoy both the amazing Travertine formations and the collonaded temples, streets, bath houses and theatre of the remains of a Greek-Roman spa city – Hierapolis. What’s more, you can even take a bath in one of these pools filled with warm, mineral-rich waters.
Destination #3:
What is it?
Situated on the Recherché Archipelago, Middle Island is home to one of the biggest natural wonders of the world and probably the most interesting body of water in the world – the Pink Lake Hillier. The interesting thing about the lake is – even the scientists aren’t even sure why it is pink – they suspect it’s caused by a certain kind of “slat-loving microbes” but some still disagree.
Why should you visit?
Well, you can simply go with your boyfriend or girlfriend and have a romantic evening gazing at the beautiful lake. But have no worries – there are still amazing things you can do on the coast of Esperance, such as horse riding, whale watching, windsurfing, kayaking and scuba-diving, and a tonne of others.
Destination #4:
What is it?
The park was named after an ancient volcano eruption that filled the park with rare gems. The Crater of Diamonds is actually the birthplace of America’s biggest diamond – the 40.23 carat Uncle Sam. The [place spreads for around 900 acres along the Little Missouri River, but one particular field makes this a must-visit place. Hint: it involves words “digging” and “Diamonds.”
Why should you visit?
The search field, which sits on top of a volcanic pipe – don’t worry, it’s not active – is the only place on Earth where you can dig for diamonds freely. Well, not completely free, because you still need to pay a small fee to search. But there’s a twist – you can search all you want and you can even keep every diamond you manage to find.
