World’s third largest country in term of land area, the United States of America offers a plethora of experiences to those who seek. With picturesque beaches, redwood forests, snow-covered peaks, bustling cities, and big open skies, the US has it all.

If we talk about the great American experience, the country’s scenic landscape is best enjoyed when you hit the highways. You have an approximate 4 million miles of freeway network to explore, traversing past red rock mountains, towering mountain peaks and many other sights to behold. To help you prepare an itinerary and cover as much ground as possible in the country, here’s our pick of five must-see attractions in the USA.

1. Niagara Falls

Perhaps the most recognisable wonders of the world, the Niagara Falls are just mind-blowing. Situated alongside the US- Canadian border, the Niagara Falls are a set of three falls, from where a massive quantity of water from Lake Erie flows into Lake Ontario, over an astonishingly vertical drop.

The more extensive section of the Niagara Falls is known as Horseshoe Falls, while a second section on the US side of the river is called the American Falls. The third section is much thinner, located next to the American Falls, and is called the Bridal Veil Falls.

While the water flow lowers down considerably during the winter, the plume of mist rising from the Niagara Falls is visible from as far away as downtown Toronto, Canada, on bright summer days.

2. Grand Canyon

There are only two words to describe this incredible sight of nature – astoundingly beautiful! Carved out by the Colorado River over forty million years, the Grand Canyon stretches for approximately 450 kilometers. To put things into perspective, there are parts of the canyon that are more than 30 kilometers wide and almost one kilometer deep.

That said, few of the exposed rocks along the Canyon’s walls are almost 2 billion years old, thus making them some of the oldest rock formations on Earth.

Moreover, the Grand Canyon is home to more than 2,000 flora and fauna species, including the California Condor, which is one of the rarest birds of prey in the world.

3. Yellowstone National Park

Often referred to as the first national park in the US, the Yellowstone is home to more than 60 percent of the total number of natural geysers in the world. These geysers are a wonder of nature – hot springs that have unique plumbing, causing them to erupt in towering explosions of steam and boiling water periodically.

While these mesmerizing phenomena and adjacent bubbling mud pots draw millions of visitors each year, the surrounding canyons, forests, and mountains are no less impressive.

The landscape here is home to several wildlife species including the moose, elk, grizzly bears, wolves, free-roaming bison, antelope, bighorn sheep, and black bears.

4. Waikiki

Waikiki is perhaps the most popular beach of not just the Hawaiian Islands but in the entire Pacific. While tourists have been flocking the beach town for more than a century now, the area continues to lure even more numbers, with its quaint charm and mesmerizing beach-scape.

Relaxing on this beautiful stretch of pearlescent sand and with palm trees blowing in the wind, you will undoubtedly feel as if you’re off on holiday in the tropics. And yet, the high-rise buildings and bustling streets adorning the background will remind you that you are not that far from civilization.

In Waikiki, you can have extensive American experience, filled with shopping sprees, fine dining, surfing, and sunbathing. If in the US, be sure to include this seemingly obscure section of Oahu in your travel itinerary.
