There are about 9.2 million skiers and snowboarders in the United States. Many of these enthusiasts use their vacation time to seek out some of the best ski resorts in the world.

We've created this list of five of the best ski resorts in the world to help you plan your next ski vacation. So now, which one will you choose to travel to?

1. Whistler Blackcomb

As one of the largest winter sports complexes in North America, Whistler Blackcomb offers superb terrain and more than 200 runs. Thirty-seven lifts take skiers all over the mountainside.

There's also a peak to peak gondola ride that takes travelers from one mountain peak to another in the world's longest unsupported lift span.

When you're tired of skiing, venture into the village to find the full-service resort. This makes it an ideal choice when traveling with family who aren't as excited about skiing.

2. Courchevel

It may have an upscale reputation, but Courchevel also delivers some serious thrills when it comes to the snow. It's home to the world's largest alpine ski domain.

There are over 60 lifts that give skiers access to more than 600 kilometers. There are ten summits that are over 2,500 meters. They also have some black runs that are considered the most challenging in the world.

When you're done challenging yourself on the slopes, head to one of the five villages for some relaxation. There seven Michelin starred restaurants to choose from for dinner.

3. Vail Mountain Resort

In the heart of Colorado is one of the biggest ski resorts in the world. Vail has something for everyone with trails designed for every skill level. With the 350 inches of snow that drops each year, you'll find plenty of well-groomed runs with breathtaking views.

While the size is impressive (over 5,289 acres), it's the variety that keeps people coming back. There are three separate terrain parks that each present their own challenge and personality.

4. Bakuriani

Located in a temperate continental climate zone, the Bakuriani ski resort is the perfect spot for winter vacations. The sunny and calm days will blend together as you decide you're going to stay right here for the duration of your vacation.

The facility was once one of the main bases for the USSR winter sports program. These days it offers a wide range of skiing adventures from everyone of all skill levels.

While you hit the slopes, there are plenty of walking and beginner-friendly trails.
